Daisy Agatha was born to parents, John Sparks and Jane Roache on December 12, 1917 in Troy in the Parish of Trelawny Jamaica. During Daisy's young adult years she moved to Kingston and later, with the financial help of friends, boarded a ship to England, where Fitzius Hendricks was waiting for her, and they were later married. Daisy's first job in England was that of a double-decker Bus Conductor, which transported her to her retirement years. Daisy then ventured out as a entrepreneur in a small retail outlet catering to West Indian foods. Daisy later managed a 16 hrs a day / 7 day a week, Pub. This operation made headline news as the first black woman to obtain such a license. During this time, Daisy actively expended her energies and resources to support several family members, providing for their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter back in Jamaica. She diligently sought sponsorship for several individuals to England and later, to Canada. In 1960 Daisy followed her husband to Canada and 5 years later, these 2 globetrotters headed for sunny Florida. As a result of poor health, the couple returned to Canada where they met Trevor Grey who embraced them as parents, attending to their every need. Mom and Dad Hendricks, as they were affectionately known, became a part of the Grey family as parents, grandparents and later great-grandparents. After Rev. Grey's passing in 2003, Rev Jean Grey continued to provide care to Mom & Dad Hendricks. Later, Bruce Salmon, Dad’s nephew, along with Faye Ashley, assisted in hospital visits, meal prep. and other domestic chores. Mom Hendricks’ most recent caregiver, Maxcine Williams stayed with the Hendricks 24/7, and continues to attend to Dad Hendricks. On Monday, March 7, Mom Hendricks was in good spirits when her family doctor made a house call. Later that evening, Mom closed her eyes and slipped away. A life well lived has no regrets, and Mom has done just that.
Her favourite words:
"I am in God's hands; He promised never to leave me nor forsake me”.
